How a deal gets called easy

Difficulty in FreeCell is usually a matter of opinion. One measure is not: the fewest free cells a deal can be won with. Our solver plays each deal with the cells taken away — first none, then one, then two — and records the smallest number that still wins. A deal lands on this page when that number is zero or one. Of the 300 deals we publish, 66 made it.

Easy does not mean obvious

An easy deal does not look easy. At the start, the four aces sit under about 10.3 cards in the easy deals and about 11.1 in the hard ones — nearly the same. What separates them is how much room the winning line needs, and that only shows once you play. So an easy deal that feels stuck in the first minute can still be won — every deal on this page can.

Use the room you have

A deal that needs one cell leaves you three to spare. That is room to experiment: park a card just to see what is underneath, then take it back with Undo if it led nowhere. It is the best place to practise the habits in the strategy guide — emptying a column early, and digging towards the aces before tidying anything else.

Ready for more?

When these start to feel routine, try the hard deals. Every one of them needs at least three free cells, and every one of them can still be won.
