Hard FreeCell

Every deal on this page needs at least three of the four free cells to win — our solver checked, and won each one. New game picks another hard deal.

What makes these hard

Our solver plays each deal again and again with fewer free cells until it can no longer win. The deals on this page lose with two cells and only win with three or four. In play that means almost no slack: a card parked for no reason can be exactly the one that costs you the game. Of the 300 deals we publish, 54 are this hard.

They do not look harder

You cannot spot a hard deal from the opening layout. The four aces start under about 11.1 cards here and about 10.3 in the easy deals — nearly the same. The difference is in the middle of the game, where a hard deal asks you to hold three cells at once and still have a move left.

How to approach them

Plan before the first move: find each ace and count what covers it. Keep one cell empty for as long as you can, and prefer any move that empties a column — it doubles what you can carry. If the table tells you the deal can no longer be won, press the button under that message: it takes you back to the last position that could still be won, so one wrong turn does not cost the whole deal.

None of them is impossible

Every deal here has been won by our solver within a hundred moves, so a loss is never the deal's fault. If they feel too tight, the easy deals need only one cell — and the strategy guide explains the moves the hint names.
